Description
The picturesque city of Strasbourg, which shares some similarities to Italy's Venice, is the capital and largest city of the Grand Est region of France. It is also one of the official seats of the European Parliament. It is located close to the border with Germany in the historic region of Alsace on islands and shores along the Ill river, a tributary of the Rhine. Shown in this photo taken on a hot August day is the Strasbourg Cathedral aka Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg or Liebfrauenmuenster. Although considerable parts of the cathedral are still in Romanesque architecture, it is widely considered to be among the finest examples of high, or late, Gothic architecture.
Strasbourg's beautiful historic city center, the Grand Island including Petite France, was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in the late 1980ies.
