Artist's Description
The oil rig "Deepwater Horizon" seen in early twilight. The Deepwater Horizon was one of the first of a new generation of floating semi-submersible platforms that were dynamically positioned and thus not requiring anchors. It was capable of exploring in the deeper waters at the edge of the continental shelf. Before the Macondo blowout and subsequent disaster the rig had figured prominently in the discovery of some of the largest oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico.
The emotional toll of the disaster extended far beyond the anguish experienced by the families of the survivors as well as the co-workers and extended especially to the coastal communities of the Gulf that were impacted by the spill as well and to the world beyond. Let us remember that it is not the companies or investors that take the biggest risks but rather the people who live and work in these dangerous places and put there lives on the line as well as those whose lives are forever changed when a man made disaster...
