Description
Tiritiri Matangi Island is a wildlife sanctuary and one of New Zealand's most important and exciting conservation projects. At first we thought a visit to Tiritiri Matangi sounded like a great way to spend the day. Several hours later we felt privileged. The Auckland Conservation Management Strategy allows only about 120 people a day to visit, and only on some days of the week. This meant that only about 30,000 of the 2 million+ visitors to Auckland each year can visit...only 1-2%! It is a place of incredible beauty and a story of the passion, dedication, and determination of the supporters of Tiritiri Matangi Incorporated. The island located 30km north east of central Auckland. A hundred and twenty years of farming had seen this 220-hectare island stripped of 94% of its native bush and the loss of many native plants and animals, but between 1984 and 1994, volunteers planted between 250,000 and 300,000 trees. The Island is now 60% forested with the remaining 40% left as grassland for species preferring open habitat. In conjunction with this planting program, all mammalian predators were eradicated and a number of threatened and endangered bird and reptile species have been successfully introduced, including the flightless takahe, one of the world's rarest species. It was an exciting moment when we spotted this one!
